Getting started
What do I need to add first?
A brand name and at least one domain you own. The owned domains matter more than they look: without them, your own certificate renewals are reported as lookalikes, and the alerts become noise you learn to ignore.
How long until I see a real alert?
Monitoring starts within about a minute of adding a brand. After that it depends entirely on whether anyone registers a lookalike domain and gets a certificate for it — which might be today or might be months away. An empty dashboard usually means nothing is wrong.
Why are domains shown as example[.]com?
Every suspected domain is defanged and never rendered as a link, in the app or in email. The whole product is about phishing; a one-click path from an alert to a live phishing site would be indefensible.
Plans and alerts
What does the free plan include?
Three suspicious domains, fixed for the life of your account. They stay the same rather than rotating, so you can actually work them — investigate, draft a takedown, and track the case. Paid plans unlock every detected domain.
Why does my dashboard say more domains were found than I can see?
The count is real and the domains are locked. Free accounts see three; the rest are available on Pro or Business. We show the count because you are entitled to know how much is there.
Can I change which three I can see?
No. If the three could be swapped, a free account would eventually see every domain by waiting — so the grants are permanent. Upgrading unlocks all of them at once.
AI visibility
Which AI assistants do you measure?
Supported: Claude (API), GPT (API), Gemini (API), Perplexity (API). Which of those are active depends on the API credentials configured for this deployment — your dashboard states which ones are actually running rather than implying all four.
Is this what I would see in the ChatGPT or Claude app?
Measured through each provider’s API. Consumer apps like ChatGPT, the Claude app, Gemini and Perplexity use different prompts, retrieval and personalisation, so these results show how a model talks about your category — not a screenshot of one person’s answer.
What counts against my monthly AI answers?
One answer from one provider for one question is one unit. Free includes 5 per month, Pro 100, and Business 500. If a provider call fails, the unit is refunded — you are not charged for an answer you never received.
What NameSignal cannot see
- NameSignal watches public Certificate Transparency logs. A lookalike domain appears here when a TLS certificate is issued for it — which is almost always, because browsers require HTTPS, but a registered domain with no certificate will not be seen.
- A small number of Certificate Transparency logs are polled, chosen to spread across operators. That covers the large public CAs; it is not every log in existence.
- AI visibility is measured through provider APIs, not the consumer ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity apps, which use different prompts, retrieval and personalisation.
- Investigation is passive: NameSignal reads public registration (RDAP) and DNS records and never opens the suspected website.
- Takedown drafts are a starting point prepared from public evidence. NameSignal does not file them for you and does not provide legal advice.
